Quilting, thread, blocks and a winner

Quilting and quilting my king size mod pop

That was my sewing day yesterday - quilting the king size Mod Pop. I take frequent breaks, managing all of this in my smallish sewing space is a challenge even with my large throat Janome Horizon. I so wish for a long arm machine and the space to put one. And that is my picture from Instagram - yes, I am putting up pictures and people even like them too, it's fun, even if they are iphone pictures.

Threads for quilting Mod Pop

This morning I am taking artsy pictures of my threads for this quilt. I thought many different colours, brands, and weights would make it more fun. It seems I am easily amused.

Bobbins

Trudi from Quilting Prolifically said she pre-winds her  bobbins. But with all the colours, I am just using one bobbin per spool or I get too mixed up. Also I need to buy more empty bobbins too. I think this quilt will use about 10 million bobbins - at least it feels that way. More quilting is on the list for today. I have to return to the curvy chains as the background red bits are all finished.

Handcrafted Seam Ripper

Thank you to everyone who entered my Celebrate giveaway and shared so many moments to celebrate with me (if you want to be cheered and have a couple of laughs, go and read the comments), and welcome to the new followers who nudged the number over 700 even though they did not have to. The winner of the stunning hand made seam ripper by Amy from During Quiet Time's husband, is Tiina who blogs at Tilkunviilaaja and makes lovely quilts. Tiina I have emailed you for your address.

Improv block for Toni

That is an improv block made for Toni in the Always Bee Learning Bee. She asked us to improv with the left overs from the herringbone block which we also made.

Herringbone Block for Toni

This is the herringbone block made with this clever tutorial by Holly at Bijou Lovely. I am always learning in this bee, this week I learned to read the instructions, not just have a quick look at the picture. One must use a 6.5" ruler, not a 6" ruler or one's block will be too small and they will have to find all the fabrics in their cupboard and make a new one for one's bee mate. Ask me how I know.

Quatrefoil Block for Jennie

That is a Quatrefoil Block for Jennie in the Modern Stitching Bee. We used the version in the Modern Blocks Book at page 150 by Solidia Hubbard, although I have seen other tutorials for this block too.

I have a stack of Summersville, and a stack of Mama Said Sew, and these are two lines I totally love, but have not really been sure how to use well. Look at them together - they work so well. I am hatching plans already - the startitis is acting up but I am still quilting Mod Pop which is on my FAL list as I plan.

By the way, I have been working slowly through all the Finish-A-Long Q1 linked posts, and will continue until I get to the end - there are 176 links. What a lot of excellent projects have been stuffed in closets and drawers! I think we are going to have some beautiful finishes, feel free to post your progress and finishes as you go in the flickr group so we can cheer you on over the quarter.

Quatrefoil Block for Jennie

This is Jennie's second block. This fabric combination also makes me smile - bikes, daisies, ladybugs, birds and flowers. (Katie Jump Rope by Denyse Schmidt, The Birds and the Bees by Tula Pink and Children at Play by Sarah Jane). I had a lot of fun pulling fabrics for both these blocks.

Well, I am back to quilting, which is a good thing as we are in the deep freeze, - 21C which is -8F, and staying in is a good idea. Tomorrow it is supposed to warm up enough to snow and continue through to Thursday.

Oh, and there is virtually no chance our schools or offices will close, this is our normal winter; just saying.

Best,

Leanne

I love that herringbone block! If I made one I think I would turn the opposite rows of block down so that the small pieces at the top of your block met to make a small square where they join... hmmm... Great quilt for a jelly roll!

It's all looking so amazing!
Hoping our 3" will not close the schools tomorrow, and someone in the council can find some more table salt for the gritter!

Lovely Bee blocks - and I love the improv block too.

Re the snow - I'm with Hadley at Flying Blind, except I know that the teenagers school is closed tomorrow. Because we only get a couple of days a year like this everything falls apart. It is hard to justify the expense (and storage!) of things like winter tyres. I have to admit everyone seemed to take it in their stride when I was a child

Oooh, loving the sneak peek of the quilting, it reminds me of dodgy 70's wallpaper (the pattern, not the colours!) which fits right in! Great blocks too :o)

Oh how I wish this country could cope with snow! Love your blocks Leanne and the quilting on the mod pop looks like a mammoth task!

Somebody has been BUSY! Those quatrefoil blocks are adorable. Love those prints.

The mod pop quilting is just amazing. I have no idea how you do it on your domestic machine. The blocks are all so different but all so nice. I am a little in love with the Chicopee. Di x

I love the quilting, Leanne! This is going to be such a stunning quilt. I'm so excited to get your blocks. They look great, but I'm sorry the one was such a learning experience. That yellow KJR is one of my very favorites, it reminds me of some clothes my mom made for me as a kid!

I feel pretty bad that I haven't linked up yet. I need to decide what I am going to finish. Not much has been started, that's the problem maybe... xxxxx

Thank you! It feels great to be the winner of the lovely seam ripper! My other sewing things, except one pincushion, are really utilitarian so this will be very much appreciated!

The quilting on the Mod Pod is looking lovely. 'm thinking of howto quilt mine, and I've not even finished it yet!

The quilt is so so beautiful and the quilting, well perfect of course. I love the different coloured threads and the shots of them :-) Congrats to Tina - it's a fabulous win.

The quilting looks really good Leanne. I completely understand the frustration of pushing a quilt through a domestic machine. Anything bigger than lap size I tend to send to a long armer now. Where abouts in Canada do you live. My brother lived in Whistler for 18 months over 2011-12, along with all the other Australians!

Your Mod Pop is looking spectacular. I love your little thread photos. Take more today and I'd love to see them tomorrow :)
Pretty pretty bee blocks. J will have one super quilt!

1. I too have learned (the hard way) to read directions, not just look at the pretty photos and think, I can do that!
2. I love all your different threads in the Mod Pop. That is on my list for one day. I love how it doesn't matter to you that all the threads are not matchy-matchy.
3. It's always nice to use up the left overs!
4. I totally won't mention that we have had 60 f (15 c) weather for a week (sort of normal, but mostly it is colder this time of year). Our schools close if you even mention the word 'snow'.

Ooh, I love the multi colored thread idea for your quilt-cant wait to see it!

Snowing here too...totally normal of course. I love the herringbone, I think I just love the fabric so much....

I love your fabric choices for the Modern Stitching Bee blocks. ANd your artsy-fartsy photos of thread are pretty cool too.

This all looks so beautiful, Leanne. You're using some wonderful prints!!

Bravo to you on the quilting. It seems you are making good progress, and I hear you on the small sewing area thing. Sometimes I'll move to the dining room table (the slippery surface makes it easier to support the quilt) but a lot of times, it's just so much effort.

I had a fun time reading about the Daisy Janie New Leaf Bee Block Hop at everyone's website. Looking forward to yours!

"Ask me how I know" bwahahaha. That's the worst, isn't it? Having to dig all those fabrics back out and start over? The pits. Lovely blocks though, and what a cool seam ripper!

wow minus 8 - I can only imagine how cold that is - we're having crazy hot weather - 2 days of 40 degrees last week ! love your quilting on mod pop - I'd love to see a close up of the quilting so I can see all of those thread changes !!
