July Scraptastic Tuesday Winners

It's time to award the July Scraptastic Tuesday Link up prizes.

I have nothing really to share before I do that. My week was filled with:

I'm cutting my fabric rainbow.

First, cutting up my rainbow of Moda Bella Solids, which is still secret blog hop project for the Fat Quarter Shop. This project will give me a bunch of new scraps but I have some ideas for how to use them right away.

I also started an online art class. I am taking a free class called Touring Modernism from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. It is art history, taught by Lisa Wainwright, fantastically well filmed, and I love it.

My painting helper.

And I spend a lot of time painting. We have to paint the whole inside of this house, which I have successfully put off for a year. I do like painting walls, as there is immediate improvement. And a surprising but great extra is that it seems to be just the right amount of climbing my ladder, bending and stretching to really help my knee feel almost normal as opposed to making it worse which I was worried would happen. But there is plenty of furniture moving, and tidying up too, so it takes a lot of time. Sundance (and Butch too) are my constant helpers, as you can see.

Now onto the prizes:

A huge thank you to our generous sponsors and here are the randomly drawn winners.
If you are a winner, congratulations, and watch for an email from me today to get you connected to your prize.

Please join Nicky from Mrs. Sew and Sow and I next month to link up your scrappy project or thoughts on taming your scrap mountain on the second Tuesday - August 9.

And if you are looking for some scrappy inspiration, visit the July links, they are awesome.

Best,

Leanne

Scraptastic Tuesday - the July link is open!

It's the second Tuesday of July, and the Scraptastic Tuesday monthly link is open. First, there has been a bit of scrappy sewing going on at my house.

Log cabins

I find that often I sit down to sew but I don't want to work on my ongoing projects. I don't have another project that I am burning to start. The other night I was also feeling physically tired as we are painting the interior of our house now and I had been painting a lot so I wanted to sit and not jump up and down to trim and press. But all the same I wanted to sew.

So I opened my pot of solid scraps and found a set of strips already cut. So I made some log cabins. I lowered my ironing board to sit along side my sewing table and I used my portable cutting mat. I kept the blocks small enough to trim on the small mat and to fit the strips that were handy.

Scrapy strips

Last night, I felt equally weary, although without a great reason. So I opened my box of sorted scrappy strips and thought I would use blackish and whiteish strips, mostly because they were on top and thus the easiest.

Log cabin, labyrinth layout

I've been itching to make some log cabin labyrinth blocks since I posted the Modern Labyrinth Trivet Tutorial last week, so I decided to make black and white labyrinths. The strips were not even widths in the box, but I just used what was handy, and the different widths work fine. Again, I let the blocks grow until I could no longer easily cut them on my little mat, so the largest is about 15" squareish.

Log cabin blocks

Here are my scrappy log cabin blocks so far. I'm not sure what they will become - I am thinking that it would not take that many more of each set to be a nice baby or lap quilt or interest on a quilt back. Or I could make them bigger next time I feel more agile in the sewing room and they could be cushions or maybe so big that one block could be a quilt or a quilt back? Many uses, so I think I will continue to play with log cabin variations with my scraps on those "I just want to sit and sew" days.

So, now is the part where you share your scrappy projects, plans and ideas. First, our fantastic sponsors:

A huge thank you to our generous sponsors for providing the following prizes which will be awarded randomly among those of you who link up.

Please join Nicky from Mrs. Sew and Sow and I by linking up a blog post or flickr or instagram photo sharing a scrappy project, in progress or finished, or your thoughts on dealing with your scrap mountain:
  • You don't have to have joined us before, everyone is welcome.
  • One link per person, and it will be your entry into the random draw for the prizes. It is the same link up here and at Nicky's blog - Mrs. Sew and Sow - so you only need to link up on one of our blogs.
  • This link is to share with our community about using your scraps, please don't use it to advertise your own products or events.
  • You can link up from your blog, instagram or flickr, but you have to link up to be entered in the prize draw.
  • Please visit at least a few of the links, they are very inspiring, and leave comments too as everyone loves to connect.
  • Use the Scraptastic Tuesday button and invite your friends to join us too. Please share our button, or a link or the hashtag #scraptastictuesday in your linked post or photo.
  • The link is open until next Monday night at 10:00 pm MST. We will announce the winners next Tuesday.
  • If you have trouble linking up, let me or Nicky know and we will get you sorted.
Best,

My own Q3 FAL goals

My creation

For Q3 of the 2016 FAL, I have decided to pick only 6 projects to finish. If you have noticed my other two quarters, I listed about 30 projects and finished one in each quarter - which is still a finish, but not really a stellar performance. So time for a new strategy.

What you see here are:

  • My Bee Sewcial quilt - I would like to enter this one in QuiltCon perhaps so to do that I need to finish it this quarter. All I need is a back and to quilt and bind it. I already have decided on a faced binding.
  • The Lion - pattern by Violet Craft - This quilt needs to head off to University with my youngest at the end of August. I am going to add some border grey to make it a bit bigger, then back, quilt and bind.
  • My Summit Shawl  - pattern by Mandie Harrington on Knitty - this is my current airplane / netflix / sitting on the patio piece and it is about half way done, so a good bet for a finish.
  • The rainbow are Bella Solids for a secret Fat Quarter Shop project which is due towards the end of August, so an excellent chance of that finish happening.
  • The improv stripes are just for fun. I have the top together but I am going to cut it to add one more strip and then it needs a back, then quilted and bound. I actually want to start more improv strip projects so I am hoping I can get this one finished first.
  • Bee Sewcial Swap - I actually have more blocks that are in that photo. This is a swap of small 6" or smaller blocks with my Bee Sewcial bee mates. My current thought is that I want them to be a larger quilt, but we shall see what they tell me when they are all here.
And it would be amazing to see 6 finishes at the end of Q3. I will also do other things, start new things, but maybe, just maybe, possibly, perhaps with a small miracle, I can get all of these finished too.

Have you posted your Q3 list yet? If not I hope you will join the global group of FAL hosts - you can go here to post your list, there are 5 days left to do so - as there are excellent prizes from our generous sponsors which are randomly drawn for the finishes posted at the end of the quarter.

Leanne

Q3 2016 FAL Proposed Finishes Link is Open!

2016 button 250 best

Here we are - already facing the THIRD quarter of 2016....can you believe it? This means 2016 is half way over!!! As you are already aware, the 2016 FAL has gone global - a community of bloggers across the world, jointly hosting the FAL. Our hosts are:
For those of you who are new to the FAL, it is a place to find motivation and encouragement to complete those unfinished projects that are hanging about becoming UFOs. Every quarter you post a list of projects you hope to finish in the next three months, and then at the end of the quarter, you post a link from your blog, Flickr or Instagram of each successful finish from your original list. Each finish is an entry for wonderful prizes from our sponsors. There is no penalty for not finishing a listed project, so feel free to make your list long or short, as you wish.

The 2016 Schedule and Rules for the FAL are on my permanent FAL page let me know if you have any questions. Here are the fantastic and generous sponsors for Q3 of the FAL - you can see each of their prizes listed under their logo (think about visiting them and saying thank you):

As you may recall from the previous quarters, there was a return of tutorial week at the end of each quarter, between the opening of the link for finishes and the day that link closes. Are you enjoying this? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below! This will take place each quarter.

Each host works hard to put these tutorials together so I hope you are visiting their blogs to encourage them. If you have a tutorial that you would like to share, please let me or another host know.

It's time to round up those projects you want to finish over the next three months, take a photo of where you are now, and make your list. Please ensure that you have at least started your projects - pulled fabric with a pattern or plan, and remember that it is finished projects that will get you entry toward the random draws for above listed prizes. So while we love to see your bee blocks, the "finish" is when they are a completed, usable project. It is very helpful if you tag your Q3 list as #FALQ3yourname.

The 2016 Q3 link for your list of proposed finishes is now open below on my blog and on each of the hosting blogs. You only link your list once, on one blog - and that link will show up on all of the blogs. If you are using Flickr or Instgram, link a mosaic and put your list in the description. Katy of The Littlest Thistle has a great tutorial on how to link-up if you have need it.

We also ask that you become part of the FAL community. Please check out the links of others and visit and comment on their lists. We all need encouragement to get those finishes done, so please share some of your own too.

The Q3 linky party will stay open until 11 pm EST, (9 pm MDT which is my time zone) July 16th - as we are global, you might want to check your time zone to determine your last possible time to link. Remember: you only need to link up on ONE hosting blog and it will automatically show up on all hosting blogs.

I'll be making my own list this weekend and will share it then.

Best,

Leanne
