Leap Day Superior Threads Giveaway

The Blue Quilt

A couple of weeks ago my friend Elizabeth from Occasional Piece - Quilt! asked me if I would join in the giveaway that she and Cindy from Live a Colourful Life had arranged with the folks at Superior Threads to give away some of their thread. Well, I use Superior Threads' King Tut thread a fair bit, and I love it, so I jumped aboard. In fact, that Blue Quilt up there was quilted with King Tut thread which had been recommended to me by my local quilt shop.

Superior King Tut thread

Tonight I thought I would see how much King Tut thread I had in my thread drawer. Well, there is no shortage at my house, as you can see, and I have no hesitation in recommending it. I set all my spools down on my new little quilt - atmosphere. - as it too was quilted with King Tut thread.

I also have to say I was thinking about Bob, the Superior Thread trainer, whose videos I watched ages ago, so I went and watched a bunch of them again. I highly recommend watching these videos, if you are at all curious about thread - just click here for the link. One thing I learned tonight is that Superior Threads recommends titanium coated Topstitch Needles for all your quilting steps, and the 90/14 size for King Tut.

The Blue Quilt - detail

The Blue Quilt was the second quilt I made ever. It is made of HSTs in a pattern I first saw done by Katie at Sew Katie Did here. My desire to make value quilts like hers with HSTs was a lot of the initial push to start me quilting. I have since learned that this pattern is called a depression block.

The Blue Quilt - detail

In this photo you can see that I quilted the outside edges of the large squares in straight lines from one edge of the quilt to the other. For the smaller squares, I quilted the square but did not pass over the larger square HSTs. However, to avoid turning the quilt to outline those squares, I passed the quilt from edge to edge and just sewed one side of the inner square per pass. A lot of starting and stopping but to great effect.

The Blue Quilt - detail

Here is a close up of the lines. This quilt has been used and washed several times since I made it in the spring of 2010. The thread looks great. I especially like those nice detailed corners where all the lines intersect.

The Blue Quilt

So 12 bloggers are participating in Leap Day Superior Threads Giveaway today and I am one of them. I don't actually have the thread in my hands yet, it is in the mail, but there are 3 spools of thread - including King Tut or Masterpiece or both - on the way for me to give to you.

All you have to do is leave a comment on this post - let me know your favourite colour of thread for quilting and if you have a tip on using or choosing thread please share that too.  I will draw a winner of the three spools of thread on Sunday morning (March 4) so you need to comment before then. Please make sure that you have an email attached to your profile or leave it in your comment as I will redraw if I cannot contact the winner.

The Blue Quilt

One more picture of the Blue Quilt, it is still one of my very favourites. This pattern has such a three dimensional effect.

Oh, and you can enter to win more thread from each of these other bloggers by visting their lovely  blogs today, February 29, Leap Day (just click the link to get there):

I just tend to use white...although I just quilted in blue and LOVED it.

Kelsey said...

I really like using white! Rather boring I know but it goes with the most :)

Shevvy said...

I've read about this thread but never used it. I usually use an Ecru, it blends better but I used a variegated yellow thread this week for some heavy FMQ and loved the effect it had.

hilary said...

I tend to use a variegated thread but if I don't have any, then I use Ecru or any blendable. I love anything Superior has to sell.

pinsandneedles said...

Wow! I love your blue quilt! It really depends on the effect I trying to create when I decide on thread. If I don't want the quilting to stand out I will use a neutral color but if I want the quilting to take stage, I will use a great contrast thread. I probably most often use white, slightly off white or gray. Thanks!

Pippa Parsons said...

I use ecru, white and variegated but am looking for a nice blue to quilt a log cabin quilt

Cheryl said...

You make such beautiful quilts, I love how you combine colors and patterns. I would love to try some new thread

Leo said...

ehh I can't really give any advice, I quilted once so far, two days ago. I had a cream and whit dots on blue as fabrics, I chose a thicked yellow thread, just because I liekd the contrast and the cushion front was very simple just 5 strips, and I thought it needed some "pepping up". So I'm still very much keeping my mouth shut and listen to the wise Ladies on the net.

Thanks for the opportunity to win this great giveaway. I love to machine piece with Superior's Masterpiece Thread in Bisque and to machine quilt with King Tut with Bottom line in the bobbin.

I love your Blue Quilt. I generally use some kind of off white or ecru, although I'm planning more colourful quilting for the aqua/blue/green wavy quilts.

Jocelyn said...

I have always liked to use a neutral color for quilting. Mostly off white, unless the quilt is a darker color then I go with the closest shade that matches.

Sadie said...

I don't really have any advice to give either! Not enough experience yet :-)
I really love your Blue Quilt and atmosphere is fab! really like how you quilted it.
Please count me in, fingers crossed!

Lesly said...

I use King Tut, too and I just try to pick a colour that will blend in with whatever the quilt top has going on. I usually choose one of their variegated spools and I have never been disappointed - it is awesome stuff.

MomWaldsPlace said...

Thank you for the chance to be entered in your Superior Thread Leap Day giveaway. I have been criticized for it, but white is my favorite color for quilting, especially on pastels and brights. I want to see the quilting!

Now I get to go peruse your previous posts. This is such a fun way to meet bloggers and have a morning cuppa. Come on over to my place and say "hi".

Me and My Stitches said...

Your blue quilt is beatiful! I have not yet tried Superior Thread, but I would like to! As far as thread color - it just depends on the quilt. Sometimes I want it to match or blend in and other times I like it to contrast.

Cassie said...

Beautiful quilt! I usually go with whatever will match the sashing, so very often white.

Debbie said...

Lately I am enjoying using colored thread to quilt more - love the King Tut - I do like gray where it fit, but also some of the variegated - subtle or bold - like them both!

works4me said...

I co-ordinate my quilting thread to the quilt which means there is generally a different colour in the bobbin than on top.

I've never tried King Tut. Will watch for it in the stores and at the sewing show in March.

Jana said...

I love Superior Thread. I usually stick with just a neutral color when I sew. Beautiful quilt!

Aliceart said...

Just found you through this -hi! I love learning about new blogs! My machine quilting is something I'm working on so my favorite color is whatever coordinate with my project so that it blends a little.
Love that quilt - it's beautiful!

I used a lot of white until I discovered company that has crazy amounts of colors and now I rarely use white or black!

I say I use green the most.

Judith, Belfast said...

I love a soft beige or natural coloured thread, or a soft grey, and I usually just buy what my purse will allow! I LOVE your blue and white quilt L, so fresh! Jxo

Amy said...

Beautiful quilt, Leanne!

I use a lot of white thread, but that may really mean that I like to match whatever the majority of the quilt is and I've been working on a white background lately!

krisgray said...

Well, I have 3 -beige, gray, and white! Yep - I like the neutrals, especially when I have a hard time finding a thread color that I like.

Moneik said...

I absolutely love King Tut and Bottomline together and use mostly purple, though I have 50+ threads of both. I have gone through about 6 spools of the raspberry purple King Tut. It just matches so many of my quilts!

Lisa England said...

Lately I've been quilting lots of things with King Tut Limestone. Bright and variegated, it's just beautiful! Your blue quilt is gorgeous. Thanks for the chance to win.

A.J. Dub. (Amy) said...

What a beautiful blue quilt! I have only quilted a few things, so my list of colors is small, but I try to use a color that works with the quilt. I have the most white thread, but I have used orange, pink and brown as well.

Jill said...

What fun! I use off white or grey for most of my piecing. The color thread is used for the quilting. Thanks for th chance.

Sarah said...

I am so terrible at getting round to quilting...Piecing, love it. But finishing the quilt.. not so good at that. Thread is still something I am learning about. Aside from polycottons that came with the machine, I've only used Gutterman Quilting thread. I've got a wee bit of Aurufil to try, and some ysl to try too...

Melinda said...

I usually use white, but have jumped into a little ecru and gray. I do use colors when I can get away with it!

SewLindaAnn said...

Your quilt is lovely! I've recently switched to Aurifil as I had so many machine and stitch problems with others. I haven't tried their thread yet, but would love to. Hard to spend $10. to try something, but it seems from what I'm reading that it compares well to Aurifil.

Love the 3D look too of the blue quilt. When I started quilting I always used a light cream thread - usually Guttermann and Schmetz denim needles size 12. I vary my colours now but think I need to be a bit more experimental.

jenstaubly said...

Thanks for the chance! I almost always use cream thread. I have never used this thread so I'd like to try it!

Rachel said...

I don't really have a favorite color for quilting. I have used all kinds. I just finished a quilt with a red blend. I've used green, blue, even black!

Paskiaq said...

I really like that quilt, but I'm partial to the blues :)

I usually use an off white. Thanks for the chance to win!

I'd love to try this thread. My favourite colour for quilting is gray and cream. Those are the two I use most.

Your blue quilt gives much inspiration. I'm collecting for one myself.
No one fav thread color for quilting but so far I've used mostly creamy tans and white.

Love your blue quilt in the snow.
My favorite color thread for quilting depends on the project. But my favorite color is probably orange, but not for quilting!

Rhonda said...

Wonderful giveaway. I think white, but love color period, so it is hard to choose.

Jennie @ Porch Swing Quilts said...

I've just been using white, but I've got a few quilts coming up that I'd like to branch out with. I'm new to thread - always used what I could get at JoAnn's, so these blog posts are a revelation to me! Thanks for the giveaway!

I probably use cream the most, but my favorite are variegated--I fell for those bright multi-colored spools when I first started quilting years ago.

And fav color--green.

Love the Superior newsletters and videos, too, btw...

I am new to sewing, so I haven't had much experience. I am about to attempt my first quilt for my daughter. I was thinking about using a white thread.

Montseta - Montsecosecose said...

I really love variegated thread, and I tend to match one of the colours in the quilt. As for tips I just recommend to use the best you can (piecing takes a lot of time and I don't want to ruin it with quilting with a bad thread).
Terrific giveaway! Thanks for the chance.

Patricia said...

I use white thread as a background filler. For the variegated threads you have to practise before stitching because the stitches really show on your quilt.

Anne said...

Thanks for the chance; your quilts are lovely! When I quilt, I try to match the main colour of the quilt itself and I often take the advice of the woman who runs the quilt store I go to. Still learning about free motion quilting but getting better...when I started, it was really important to match the thread as closely as possible!

Annabella said...

Your blue quilt is so calm and relaxing. Thanks for the chance to win some lovely thread - I`m very boring about thread as I have to bring it over here and so I get cream, taupe or white so that it will go with more or less anything!

Barb Neiwert said...

What a gorgeous quilt - love those colors, and the quilting design. I have been using a gray thread lately in a lot of my piecing and quilting - it seems to blend quite nicely. I haven't tried Superior threads before, but I plan to take a look at that video to learn something new today!

Jen said...

I usually quilt in a neutral color - white or bone.... But I'm getting more brave! Thanks for sharing that lovely blue quilt! Was that made from a pattern? If so, what? Thanks so much for the giveaway!

Shayla Sharp said...

I like to match my thread to the colors in the quilt. If I have a lot of mixed colors, then I often go for a varigated or a light gray.

I don't have a color preference nor do I use strictly solids or variagated. I used whatever works best with the quilt, but it always involves color. I am not a neutral girl, either in piecing or quilting lol.

I love King Tut thread and have used the Masterpiece once and really liked that as well, so I would love to win your giveaway!

i love the quilt - the blues are fantastic and it does look three dimensional! i like a color from connecting threads called silver. i use it for everything. it blends in completely with off-whites and isn't glaringly white on bright colors. i think it's great. thanks for a chance on some great thread!

I don't have a go-to color for quilting, as it varies from quilt to quilt, but I don't bother with 100% cotton. First, the great Leah Day has freed me from what "they" say and second, because there just isn't the same range of color available as with poly threads.

Katy Cameron said...

Love that blue quilt, it looks fab!

Thanks for the chance to win :o)

Thank you for the chance to win! My quilting isn't at the skill level that I want it to stand out, so I look for a good neutral. I'm working toward more decorative quilting, though!

I have quite a few King Tut threads, the colours are gorgeous and it quilts real nice on my Bernina. Originally I had started out with always using cotton thread on cotton fabrics, went away from that for a while, but now I am back in the cotton on cotton brigade lol. Lately I have been working on Diane G's echo feathers and have started using neutral thread (hides the imperfections :)), and one of my WIPs is in pastel colours, but generally I am for "the brighter the better"! Thanks for the chance to win some :)

I more often than not use a neutral colour, but it depends on the colours in the quilt. Sometimes I'll use a colour that compliments rather than blends in.

You did a beautiful job on that quilt. It's very pretty.

I tend to match my fabrics when choosing thread colors but now I am seeing more and more others recommeding to just use white. I also have seen many saying to use the invisible thread but my machine absolutely hates invisible thread no matter what I have tried so that will never happen. lol

Can't say I have a favorite color for quilting. I guess it depends on the the quilt--do I want it to blend, compliment, contrast or match. I am working on 3 quilts right now. I probably use red on the red/black/white, a blue on the Batman, and white on the lavender/white.

When I am piecing, I use grey - all the time - except when I don't - which is almost never. But I have used black - but grey is my go to favorite thread colour to use as it really does blend in to anything I feed my machine.
Black - it stands out if I forget I used it!!

I have heard about the King Tut thread, but I have not used it. Is it good for piecing too?? See!? what I don't know about thread could fill a libary!! I am going to watch the video's you wrote about!! Needles are also a lesson to be learned - and people think this sewing this is easy!! ;-)

I really like your blue quilt. I don't use white much in my work, creams or beiges, some white but not like this one you've shown. Hmmm.
Wounder why not??? It looks great done the way you have worked with it in this project. Makes me think of summer, warmth, laughter and hugs!!

If I have to choose, then off white would be my favorite color to quilt with.

I like using different colors as well as variegated thread for quilting. Your quilt is very pretty. Thanks for the chance to win some thread.

Love the quilt! I have never tried Superior thread so would love to win some. I usually use a taupe color for most of my quilting.

Kathryn said...

I often use off white, but with a colorful quilt with many colors, I use a varigated. Thanks for the giveaway. Kathie L in Allentown

Depends on what the project is. Sometimes need to match the fabric other times want a contrasting color.

Thank you for the chance to win.

Was this really your second quilt? this is amazing! The method you used to quilt it is just as awesome as the quilt. Did you quilt this on a longarm machine? Thanks so much for sharing and for the giveaway threads. I am inspired to make this quilt. Thanks, Reba

Your blue quilt is gorgeous! I don't lean to any one color, depends on the quilt. I use lots of variegated threads. Thanks for the chance to win some Superior thread. Happy Leap Day!

Alisa said...

I tend to use mostly just Natural coloured thread. I'd like to venture out and use different colours though.

I love variegated threads.

Kim said...

Umm...well...I haven't actually quilted a quilt--yet! I just finished a crib quilt top, for this one I bought a variegated thread in all the colors of the quilt. I hope it will look okay!

I will probably most often use white--but then, I have been seeing lots of very creative quilting in colors.

Your blue quilt is beautiful! I am off to check out Kate's blog.

Sharon said...

I usually use an ecru or natural color. Have never used Superior threads but would love to give them a try. Thanks!

Deb said...

My favorite color would probably be a neutral ivory color--it's what I always buy. I would love to try King Tut--don't think I ever have before.

The only quilt I ever hand quilted was done in red. It's a log cabin, and it has held up very well.

WoW! I love your blue quilt. Love the pattern and the effect it gives. Great job on your quilting as well. I have not learned to FMQ as of yet. I have quilted baby quilts and tablerunners but usually just do stitch in the ditch with a matching thread. With piecing I usually use Ecru or something similiar.

Thank you and Superior Threads for a neat giveaway and a chance to win.

i don't have a favorite color for the actual quilting - it depends on what works best with the colors of the quilt! I do like variegated threads though.

I'll admit I almost always use cheapo thread from the local big box store. I pick my quilting thread based on the dominant colors in my quilt... I used navy thread to quilt my latest because it blends in well with the background. Thanks for the chance to win!

I am mostly a hand-quilter, so I like to use either white, or off white depending. I recently tried King Tut variegated thread and I really liked how smooth it quilted. thanks for the giveaway!

I'd say cream or light grey. But I'm doing a quilt with lots of pink and grey and I think I'll do pink. I also try to match the content of the thread to the content of the quilt, such as cotton thread with cotton fabric and batting. For archival reasons it's a great idea to match the types of materials in a quilt if you want it to last a long time. If it'll be a quilt that gets used and abused and maybe threadbare in the next 5-10 years it doesn't matter too much.

Andee said...

I don't do much of my own quilting but when I do I tend to match my threads or go with white..in an effort to hide it!

I love your quilt & it's great to have close-up photos of the quilting - I wish more people would do that. My favourite thread colour for quilting is white. Thanks for the giveaway.

New to quilting and I just pick what ever color the quilt is. I have been looking and reading blogs and while I have a few ideas of wild things to do but not yet worked up nerve to do it yet.

Thanks for the giveaway, Leanne! I choose the thread colour based on the project. The last quilt I quilted, I used a cool variegated thread in yellows.

Thanks for reminding me about those videos.... I'd seen them before ...it will be good to do a refresher course! I guess white is my most used thread but my last project had purple and pink hand quilting!

I mostly use white or natural color thread for quilting. Thanks for a chance to win this giveaway. I absolutely love your quilt, too!

I've only made 4 quilts & 1 tablerunner (I'm a new quilter), but for those I've used the big cones of Coats & Clark mercerized cotton thread in cream & black (They are about $5.37 at Walmart). I'd love to be able to sew with fancy thread! Thank you for the chance to win.

I have been liking verigated threads... but think white may become my favourite with newer projects

I usually use an off white, or cream thread. It blends very well.

Hi...am new to quilting...your Blue Quilt is beautiful and only your second!! I have only ever used YLI for my quilts as I can order it locally (in Ireland)...would love to try Superior as it seems to be widely recommended and loved! I use white mostly and a primary color variegated for my baby quilts.... :)

I tend to use white for piecing, but I love a variegated for quilting.

Love your blue and white quilt...stunning!

Gloria said...

I love that blue and white quilt!
I would only use white thread on a pure white fabric, mostly I use a neutral (either ecru or a grey) or a colour that works by not standing out too much!

ARaDA said...

Mostar it's a cream thread, but I once used a variegated purple thread by King tut and loved the results! Thanks for the chance to win,

Wonderful quilt. I am just getting my Superior threads sampler. I wonder if there is a variegated white or light? That would be cool as I like the subtle shadings with variegated thread.

Gorgeous quilt and I love the quilting :)
I like grey, it tends to go with everything, all shades! I use whatever I think will work with the quilt and backing but I'm starting to get braver and experiment a bit more!

Your quilt is beautiful.
When quilting I use a lot of white/off white. I will use colored threads some. I had a spool of the Masterpiece that I used up a while back. I really liked it a lot.

SewingKaren22 said...

I generally piece with off-white thread, unless I'm working with very dark fabric. Then I'll try to match the thread to the fabric.
Thanks for the giveaway!

Meg said...

I love that quilt--it has such a fresh vibe! I, like a lot of the commenters, use a lot of white/off-white/cream thread for both piecing and quilting. I also use a lot of grays and tans to quilt some of the scrappier quilts I make--they blend quite nicely in into all the different colors!

Gidget said...

I love to experiment with thread color... so really love the varigated. I do try to match one color in the quilt somewhere!

Betty said...

I use beige more than any other color, but I love using variegated threads.

I quilted an orphan block into a gift for a friend, and I used white. It was fun, and I liked the result, but I'm not to sure about a large project.

I've only made a couple of quilts so far, but I try to match the main color scheme of my fabric and thread. If not, I use gray when I'm lazy.

Anonymous said...

it all depends of the quilt, up to now I used all the coloursbut I do love to use white and red

Sandy Chavez said...

I love Superior Threads and am starting to use the recommended topstitch needles for all my sewing ...wow, what a difference. I have used King Tut #966 (Sandstorm) because it is neutral and I still am not a great quilter so I don't want to make my quilting too noticable, YET! Thanks for the great give-away opportunity.

Hi Leanne, thanks for participating in the Superior Thread giveaway. Its only been a couple of months since I discovered Superior Thread and I will not be quilting/piecing with any other thread. When I piece I use Masterpiece in Ecru..it just seems to melt into whatever you are piecing. As for my favorite color to quilt with depends on the main color in the top. Again thank you for giving us a chance to win a great thread! Good luck everyone!

i like to use a pale grey, it seems to be neutral for most prints, unless a specific color of fabric is used then i try to go a shade lighter. thanks for the giveaway.

I usually use a matching colour slightly darker than my quilt top. I have heard of king tut from the other bloggers that are running this amazing giveaway but I have not seen it here in the UK thanks for the chance ttfn Nicole
