Sharing Bee Blocks - the Bacon Connection

Bacon Inspired

I want to connect here more often, recently I have let other priorities and the ease of instagram get in the way of sharing my work on the blog and I hope to change that. So for a while I am going to share what I am working on now and also catch up here with things that I missed blogging about.

These are my blocks made for Debbie in Bee Sewcial for July. In this bee, the queen bee gives an inspiring prompt, as specific or general as she likes, and we make what we want. The only restriction is that the blocks are made with solids only, no prints. It is really the best bee ever and I am so glad to have started it with my friend Stephanie.

Debbie asked for bacon inspired blocks - I learned this spring that fancy places sometimes refer to bacon as pork belly, which is not my favourite image. Debbie shared an inspiring pinboard with us and suggested some possible colours.

This first block is a fairly obvious interpretation of bacon in the package. I wanted to include some skinny strips. It is 12.5" on one side and longer on the other.

Bacon Inspired

This is my sizzling bacon inspired block. Again 12.5" on one side and longer on the other. Both blocks also include both cotton and cotton/linen blend fabrics.

Bacon Inspired Blocks

I have to say that I had a lot more fun than I expected thinking about and planning these bacon inspired blocks. It is unusual for me to be visually inspired by ready to cook/eat proteins - as opposed to vegetables or fruits or live animals - but clearly I was just not seeing the possibilities.

You can see where Debbie is going with this quilt in her post here. It is going to be an amazing quilt.

Best,

Leanne

October Scraptastic Tuesday Winners

Before I announce the October Scraptastic Tuesday winners, I have a little about my most recent scrappy project to share:

Triangle improv so far

This started with a fat quarter bundle of orange and low volume prints that I curated for the Fabric Spark October Monthly Sparks Club. I was inspired by Gwen Marston's work to make improv triangles. I had the great pleasure to take a class from Gwen at QuiltCon and although this is not from the class, it is definitely inspired by Gwen who is an amazing teacher and artist. The piece turned into a medallion / log cabin artsy sort of piece. It is currently about 60" square and I think it is ready to be squared up and quilted.

First, I am going to fix that bottom white border as it is too wavy for my taste. I cut these pieces freehand and for the few that had a straight side, I recut them without rulers. It makes it harder to piece large border bits without the wavy border thing happening but it is easy to fix.

So you might be wondering about how this is scrappy - as I started with a new bundle of fat quarters. First, it is all different fabric lines which some people call scrappy. And I used some scraps in addition to the bundle. And this project has left me with a bunch of new scraps too, although I admit to throwing the smaller bits out but don't worry there are still lots of scraps left.

And I am loving it so I could not wait to share it here.

Thank you to our very generous sponsors:

My goals for Q4 of the 2016 FAL

    Q4 FAL 2016 Goals

I have decided that since I finished 2 out of 6 last quarter, I can set 9 goals for the last quarter of the 2016 FAL. I am not sure where the logic is there but I really would like to finish these projects.

    They are:

    • Bee Sewcial quilt - this quilt needs a back and to be quilted. I am a bit stumped on the quilting, should I go dense and detailed, dense with just lines, a cross hatch, or wavy lines, decisions.
    • Bee Sewcial swap. I have it in mind to make my blocks - there are actually 11 just not all in the photo - into a larger quilt. We shall see.
    • Shawl - all I have to do is wash and block it. It will take a long while to pin out to block, that is what is holding me up on this one. '
    • Striped quilt - this one got stuck because I left out one of the striped strips I made because it was smaller than the rest and I had no more of the fabrics. I want to add it in so the decision is to either make the quilt smaller or add on other fabrics to the shorter strip.
    • New circle improv - I have a whole quilt in mind.
    • A present quilt - this pretty bundle of pink and green is for a present quilt, so I'm not telling you the rest yet.
    • Improv triangle striped quilt - I need a back and then to quilt.
    • Triangle improv - I just started these and I see a quilt in them too.
    • Holiday napkins and a quilt or runner or something - I adore these prints and I need a lot more napkins. I am hoping the left overs from the napkins can turn into a holiday quilt or at least a runner.
So now I want to go and sew, but it is the very start of my day and the job that pays the bills is calling.

If you have not yet made your Q4 to be finished list and linked up, please do - go here. There are a lot of fantastic prizes to win, all in random draws and think of how good you will feel getting some of your older projects finished as 2016 comes to an end.

    Best,

October Scraptastic Tuesday - the Link is Open!

It's the second Tuesday of October, and the Scraptastic Tuesday monthly link is open.

I have to admit that this Tuesday totally snuck up on me. Happy Thanksgiving to those of you from Canada who celebrated it over this past long weekend. And that is my explanation, we cleaned and tidied and made 5 yummy pies and then a turkey and all the fixings for dinner yesterday. So I am thankful for many things, including leftovers and a clean house, but it meant no sewing this weekend. So I will be perusing your projects for scrappy inspiration.

A huge thank you to our generous sponsors for providing the following prizes which will be awarded randomly among those of you who link up.
    • Massdrop - Fabric Bundle to be announced

Please join Nicky from Mrs. Sew and Sow and I by linking up a blog post or flickr or instagram photo sharing a scrappy project, in progress or finished, or your thoughts on dealing with your scrap mountain:
          • You don't have to have joined us before, everyone is welcome.
          • One link per person, and it will be your entry into the random draw for the prizes. It is the same link up here and at Nicky's blog - Mrs. Sew and Sow - so you only need to link up on one of our blogs.
          • This link is to share with our community about using your scraps, please don't use it to advertise your own products or events.
          • You can link up from your blog, instagram or flickr, but you have to link up to be entered in the prize draw.
          • Please visit at least a few of the links, they are very inspiring, and leave comments too as everyone loves to connect.
          • Use the Scraptastic Tuesday button and invite your friends to join us too. Please share our button, or a link or the hashtag #scraptastictuesday in your linked post or photo.
          • The link is open until next Monday night at 10:00 pm MST. We will announce the winners next Tuesday.
          • If you have trouble linking up, let me or Nicky know and we will get you sorted.
          Best,

          Leanne
