A good book: The Ultimate Guide to Machine Quilting


I have been enjoying this new quilting book written by two great quilters, Christa Watson and Angela Walters. Christa has become an internet friend who I have had the pleasure of meeting a few times in person too. Angela has been my quilting teacher twice, once at Quilt Con and once at Sewdown Nashville. Both of these women are friendly, fun, and talented quilters.


The Ultimate Guide to Machine Quilting is a great quilting resource. My favourite feature of the book is that there are parts written by Angela and parts written by Christa. They both give their own views and advice about different topics and they both make and quilt the same quilt patterns - modern quilt patterns that have been designed by one or the other of them. And the best part - I can hear each of their distinct voices in their writing, this book was not edited to take their voice out of the words. 


Both Angela and Christa share a similar attitude - that everyone can learn to machine quilt the designs that they use, and on both a domestic sit down machine or on a long arm machine. The book is empowering and encouraging, and full of inspiration for how to plan and quilt your quilt, and of different quilting motifs to use.

I know I will be referring to this book often, and I highly recommend it if you love the quilting part of making quilts or want to learn more about quilting. Scraptastic Tuesday - the April link is open and I have a quilt to share


It's the second Tuesday of April, so the Scraptastic Tuesday monthly link is open.

Villa

 I am excited to show off Villa - my scrappy giant log cabin quilt. This quilt is 55" by 56" after the wash. I have shared a lot about this quilt on the blog before, and I have been waiting to show her off for a couple of weeks now.


As you can see in this photo, I quilted a cross hatch on this quilt. Using the long arm, I quilted horizontal freely drawn lines randomly spaced from about .5" to 2.5" apart. Then I took the quilt off the machine and reloaded her turned so that the next set of similarly quilted lines would be perpendicular to the first lines. After washing, the effect is wonderful - very vintage looking which compliments the scraps and the log cabins well -  and worth the extra quilting time.

I pieced the back with some large pieces from my shelves that work nicely with the front.


The binding is a black and white print from Doe by Carolyn Friedlander which compliments the vintage look and does not add more colours. I stitched this binding on by machine.

Here is a before the wash photo. She is lovely but a bit stiff and very flat.

This photo is in the bright sun, and it shows off the puffy goodness of this quilt. I have to say that I never tire of log cabins, and so it's time to make more scrappy ones.

      It's time to link up your Q2 FAL list!

      Here we are - already facing the second quarter of 2016....can you believe it? As you are already aware, the 2016 FAL has gone global - a community of bloggers across the world, jointly hosting the FAL. Our hosts are:
      For those of you who are new to the FAL, it is a place to find motivation and encouragement to complete those unfinished projects that are hanging about becoming UFOs. Every quarter you post a list of projects you hope to finish in the next three months, and then at the end of the quarter, you post a link from your blog, Flickr or Instagram of each successful finish from your original list. Each finish is an entry for wonderful prizes from our sponsors. There is no penalty for not finishing a listed project, so feel free to make your list long or short, as you wish.

      The 2016 Schedule and Rules for the FAL are on my permanent FAL page, here, let me know if you have any questions.

      It's time to round up those projects you want to finish over the next three months, take a photo of where you are now, and make your list. Please ensure that you have at least started your projects - pulled fabric with a pattern or plan, and remember that it is finished projects that will get you entry toward the above listed prizes. So while we love to see your bee blocks, the "finish" is when they are a completed, usable project. It is very helpful is you tag your Q2 list as #FALQ2yourname.

      That is my Q2 mosaic of projects. Each of those will be a quilt, except for 6 (counting from the top left) will be a pillow and 13 will be a guitar case. I decided after only finishing one of my list of 9 last time, it was better to have more options this time round. I know there are a few other unfinished projects around my sewing room but this is most of them and I am hoping to finish a few more than one this quarter.

      The 2016 Q2 link for your list of proposed finishes is now open below on my blog and on each of the hosting blogs. You only link your list once, on one blog - and that link will show up on all of the blogs.

      2016 FAL Q1: Last call to link up your finishes

      It's time for me to fess up about how I did with my Q1 FAL list. One finish of the nine projects on my list. Still a finish is a finish, and I am happy to have one at least.

      I finished Spin, you can read about her here, I am very proud of this quilt. I still have to write the pattern up, and I am going to make that happen soon - it's just more fun to use my free time to sew, not sit at the computer.

      If you have not yet linked up your Q1 finishes from your Q1 list of projects to be finished, it's time to get that done, go here, as the link closes around supper time tomorrow night (April 7). We have a lot of fantastic prizes and each finish is an entry, so don't forget to get your projects linked up.       Some blocks and a #2016FAL reminder

      Umbrella block


      I am just popping in today to share a couple of projects and to remind you about the FAL Tutorials.

       I made those 4 Umbrella Blocks for #dropsofloveforem which is a project started by Katherine (@kakiofhoneyhill on Instagram). They have enough blocks now but are looking for donations for an auction, go here.

       Th Umbrella block was fun to make and the pattern is a free one from Craftsy - go here. It's another great scrap buster too.

      I also made this block to send to Hillary for her fly Merel fly project - read about it on her blog Entropy Always Wins here. This block is from Kajsa Wikman's book Scandinavian Stitches, which I was happy to pull off my shelf and read again. Raw edge appliqué is not something I do often, and when I do I wonder why that is. It is really fun to sketch away with the black thread.

       I have to get both of these projects into the mail Monday morning, I missed the mail on Friday by just letting the day get ahead of me, so tomorrow I will get my much more reliable spouse take care of it.
