QuiltCon Show - the comments

I wanted to share my QuiltCon show comments. There was a lot of discussion of the show comments last time, so it seems right to share the comments I received this time. The Modern Quilt Guild, in my view, listened to the concerns and significantly improved the show this time.

These are the comments for Peace, which is the quilt in the next photo. I am very pleased that they liked the composition and design as I plan to release this design as a pattern shortly. A couple of things are interesting.

Peace

First, the MQG put this quilt in the Piecing category. I think that must have been because it is important to piece well when making a bold geometric design as one small piecing error would really negatively impact the overall impression.

And I was surprised at the binding comment, but there is the tiniest bit of play in the stitches of the binding on this quilt so I will take that to heart and restitch the binding - it was done by hand - if I show this quilt again.  My thought was if the only a negative thing was about the binding, that's great.

These are the comments for Cycles 2, which is one of my most favourite quilts ever and really the quilt that kicked off my continuing series of cycles quilts. The comments are positive, which is lovely. This quilt was placed by the MQG into use of negative space - a great fit I think. There is play in the negative space around the circles and also in the interaction between the thread and colour in the larger border spaces.

  Cycles 2

This quilt won a first place in its category in the American Quilters Association show in Phoenix last February and it was selected to show at the International Quilt Festival in Houston. She did not really stand out at QuiltCon, however, at least to me. She is a smallish quilt - 37.5" x 39" and the palette is beachy, which is calm and restful. Many of the QuiltCon quilts were larger and brighter. Even Peace, which has basically the same palette appears brighter somehow.  Still, one of my most favourite and I was so happy that she was able to be in the QuiltCon show.

These are the comments for Breathe. The MQG placed Breathe in the Minimalist Design category and she won first place in the category, so clearly a good fit. It is clear that these judges were also minimalist in their use of adjectives - a good and pleasing quilt can win.

Breathe

I was truly surprised and so thrilled that Breathe was selected to win a first place in the Minimalist Design category. I made this quilt at a time when I needed a constant reminder to just breathe, and I think that the elements of this quilt capture my intention. She is another quilt in the cycles series, and there are more cycles quilts in my head still.

Breathe's beautiful ribbon

Breathe was selected to be part of the Modern Quilt Guild's travelling exhibit, so she will not be home for a year. Maybe the exhibit will be somewhere where you can see her and say hi for me.

I would like to thank the Modern Quilt Guild, all the volunteers and the show judges for the time and effort that they took to put together a most amazing quilt show. I appreciated the care and attention that was taken with my quilts and with all the quilts, and the show was just so inspiring and beautiful.

There are many good blog posts about the QuiltCon and I expect there are many I have missed. Some insights from one of the judges, Janine Vangool, from UPPERCASE are here. You can see all the winning quilts on the Modern Quilt Guild blog here.

I have already reserved a room in Pasadena for QuiltCon 2016, I hope you are planning to go too.

I was back on Tuesday from a far too quick trip out of country over the last few days (where I had no access to the internet) which seems to have required a lot of sleeping to recover from. I sure hope that I will be back to sewing tonight.

Best,

Leanne

Scraptastic Tuesday - March link up

Scraptastic Tuesday

I made my list of projects for Scraptastic Tuesday last month, so I would focus on the scrappy projects when I had some sewing time.

But the problem is that I have not really worked on any of them since I started getting ready to go to QuiltCon - I just have a growing scrappy mess. And last week I again had to go out of country, this time for work, meaning again no progress on the scraps.  I am eager to get back into my sewing room this week..

So with no scrappy progress to show you, I am going to ask you to inspire me instead. Please join Nicky from Mrs. Sew and Sow and I by linking up a blog post or flickr or instagram photo sharing a scrappy project, in progress or finished, or your thoughts on dealing with your scrap mountain:
  • You don't have to have joined us before, everyone is welcome.
  • One link per person, and it will be your entry into the random draw for the prizes. It is the same link up here and at Nicky's blog - Mrs. Sew and Sow - so you only need to link up on one of our blogs.
  • Please visit at least a few of the links, they are very inspiring, and leave comments too as everyone loves to connect.
  • Use the Scraptastic Tuesday button if you like (code is on the sidebar) and invite your friends to join us too.
  • The link is open until next Monday night at 10:00 pm MST. We will announce the winners next Tuesday.
  • If you have trouble linking up let me or Nicky know and we will get you sorted.
Here are the fantastic March Link sponsors:

A huge thank you to our generous sponsors for providing the following prizes:
  • Massdrop - Andover Chambray fat quarter bundle
Don't forget to check out what Nicky from Mrs. Sew and Sow has to share today and feel free to invite your friends to join us too, the more participation, the more inspiration!

I love quilting - AYOLF March and FAL goal

Quilting

A couple of weeks ago I put this quilt on my long arm's frame and then it sat for a long while. Last weekend I started quilting a bit, and although I was loving doing it, I did not move fast. I think I am still a lot overloaded from QuiltCon and finding it hard to settle and quilt in my sewing room.

I've finished the centre bits - this pattern is called Consider and I am hoping to get it finished and tested this month. If you are interested in pattern testing let me know (all I have to offer for your help is a free copy of the pattern and my thanks). I expect to have the pattern ready for testers by March 16.

Quilting

I set out to use all line based designs. I have been reading the internet about quilting and somewhere there was a post or two suggesting that quilting lines was the easy way out. I don't care, I do as I like. And I love lines.

Quilting

The photos are dark, I tend to get time to do this after dinner and it is still winter.

Quilting

I did get one edge of the borders done with this lovely variegated Aurifil 50wt green-aqua thread using a border treatment like one of the patterns I learned in Krista Withers' class at QuiltCon. It looks great with the overall quilt. So now I need to carry this pattern along the rest of the borders, and then bind this quilt.

So I am going to make finishing the quilt my March A Year of Lovely Finishes Goal - join in the link and check out the other March goals over at Fiber of All Sorts here. This quilt is already one of my Q1 FAL goals too, so lots of incentive to get this one done soon, which I seem to need right now.

Best,

Echoes - Ta Da! & she is in the QuiltCon magazine too

Echoes

I have waited a long time to introduce you to my quilt Echoes. She is a large quilt - about 70" square and was made from Kona Charcoal and a bunch of small pieces of Kona blues and greens.

Echoes uses the allium block that I designed last summer - again I stress that although I made this block up myself and gave it a name, it does not mean that someone else did not also invent it earlier, I just have not seen it before.

I designed this quilt, made her and shipped her off to the kind folks at Interweave (F & W) in September. And when I got to QuiltCon I got to see her in the QuiltCon magazine for the first time - go here to see it/buy one if you don't see it at your usual shop. This is a wonderful magazine, and there are photos of quilts from the show and patterns from several of my quilting friends too.

Echoes

This large quilt was styled so nicely in the magazine and my pattern looks so nice. This is my first pattern in a print magazine and I am so proud of it.

Echoes

Echoes has a lot of negative space and I have to say I just love this quilt. I love how you see the echoes of the circles and that your brain wants to continue to echo the circles further into the negative space. It's fun how three allium blocks give you the echo of five full circles, and so many partial ones, and squares are echoed too.

Echoes

I quilted Echoes using a variegated aqua Superior King Tut thread with straightish lines set at random widths apart from 1/8" to about 1" or so. I wanted to use a style of quilting that I both love and that is easily done on a home machine. The coloured thread adds such a nice extra to all the negative space without detracting from the industrial modern style.

All these photos are after she was washed as I wanted to ensure that the extra texture was present.

Echoes

For her back, I pieced big chunks of some favourite fabrics. And she even has a hanging sleeve already on, which is nice because she was accepted to be in the Canadian Quilter's Association juried show in June too.

Echoes

You can see that this quilt is too big for my usual quilt photo location - a stairwell in my office building. But this photo gives you a good idea of her true colours - the dark grey is so hard to photograph well.

This is the last of my QuiltCon related posts. It was so nice to have my quilt in this special magazine as part of QuiltCon.

Best,

Leanne
